Andrew Pierce has highlighted what he called a "huge problem" for Labour as Border Force personnel prepare to vote on strike action.

During a discussion with co-host Miriam Cates, Andrew questioned who would provide what he termed the "Uber service" for migrants if industrial action proceeds.

The comments came as approximately 120 PCS union members working on Channel patrol vessels prepare to ballot over a long-running dispute concerning specialist role allowances.

These Border Force Maritime staff, responsible for intercepting smuggling operations and small boat crossings, have been awaiting resolution of a payment review for over six years.

The pair were discussing Spanish tourist destinations where violent confrontations between migrants have occurred.

Miriam acknowledged that whilst Kent residents do witness beach arrivals, the UK's approach differs from continental Europe.

Speaking on the channel, Andrew said: "Yeah, but it just shows, doesn’t it, that we think we’ve got a problem here, but this is Europe-wide. And we haven’t seen that happen here yet."

Miriam said: "No I mean, people in Kent do report migrants turning up on the beaches.

"But of course, most of the time our border forces actually pick them up in the Channel and bring them in, at least so they can be registered."

Andrew responded: "And really, another problem for this Government and for people living in Kent is that Border Force staff are now balloting to go on industrial action.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"More strikes. Who’s going to operate the 'Uber service' for the migrants then?"

PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote condemned the treatment of Border Force Maritime workers, stating: "It is a disgrace that our members have been waiting six years for this situation to be resolved."

The union confirmed that whilst management had promised to backdate certain allowances to April this year, staff could wait months before receiving these payments.

Border Force leadership had not adequately addressed workers' concerns, according to PCS representatives.

Ms Heathcote added: "Although it's shameful that managers need a strike ballot to focus their minds, it's clear that our members are not prepared to be messed around any longer."

The ballot encompasses staff whose duties include maritime searches and identifying vessels involved in people smuggling or unauthorised Channel crossings.
