The controversial 32-year-old, who represents the Bronx is the House of Representatives, said the orange beverage tasted similar to 'Kola Champagne', a popular drink in South America.

Ocasio-Cortez, who arrived at COP26 in Glasgow on Tuesday, recorded a social media video of herself drinking an Irn-Bru, describing it as the 'moment of truth'.

'I was so shocked at having something in Glasgow that tasted like home,' she said.

'However Irn-Bru is also very unique on its own. It's got pizazz. I like it!

'Oh my God, love it, love it. Irn-Bru, count me in.'

'I am trying to get my hands on some!' she said. 'So far it's been non-stop work with no real independent time so I am hoping for a window to find some.

'The schedule has us leave early and get back late. Where do I find it??'

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted an image of her and Ocasio-Cortez posing with a drink.

Sturgeon said: 'Amidst all the serious business at Cop26 today, I'm pleased to also report that @AOC now has a supply of Irn-Bru.'

Ms Ocasio-Cortez went back to Sturgeon: 'Talk about Scottish hospitality! Thank you for the (very special) delivery, Madam first minister.'
