Airports across Europe have been affected by icy conditions

Airports across Europe are experiencing severe delays and closures that could impact thousands of Britons, with dozens of flights being diverted.

Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and the Czech Republic have all experienced airport closures as a result of the icy conditions.

In a post on Facebook, Budapest Airport confirmed: "Due to the weather conditions, like several airports in Central Europe, Ferenc Liszt International Airport has been ordered to be closed due to the increased safety risks caused by heavy rain and extreme ice.

"Ferenc Liszt International Airport temporarily does not accept or start flights since 10.25am for security reasons.

"In and around the airport, January 13, snow or heavy rain can be experienced since Tuesday dawn, therefore the highest level of snow is currently in effect at the airport."

The airport said that services were "constantly cleaning the runways", adding: "During the morning, the nose of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ETH3707’s cargo flight slipped from the solid surface of the runway into the grass while rolling, resulting in the aircraft being stuck."

The post continued: "The circumstances of the event are currently being investigated, the airport operator together with the relevant authorities are doing everything possible to prevent the blockage of the aircraft. Budapest Airport constantly publishes information on the current conditions of the airport.

"Passengers are asked to follow the airport website and airline information for the latest information regarding their flight. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Meanwhile, Prague Airport took to X to confirm the delays.

"Václav Havel Airport Prague is currently operating only in a very limited mode," the airport said.

"Due to intense freezing rain, arrivals are being restricted to allow for de-icing of the main runway, taxiways, and aircraft stands.

"These arrival restrictions will cause flight delays throughout the day.

"We kindly ask passengers to monitor our website and their airline’s website for up-to-date information."

The airport added it has "prepared for this situation carefully in advance".

Airports in Vienna and Bratislava were also due to reopen on Tuesday morning, though the former later posted on Instagram that there would be some disruptions to flights on January 13.

A spokesman for Vienna Airport said that a thick layer of ice had formed on runways and kept freezing up again amid efforts to clear it.

Staff and resources were restricted at the airport as attention turned to de-icing the main runway.

Bratislava Airport had originally closed the main runway until 9.15am local time on Tuesday morning, but this has been extended to 11.15am.

"An emergency operations team is in session to assess runway braking action and determine when the airport can safely resume operations," a social media statement read.

"Passengers are advised to follow the airport’s website, their airline’s mobile applications, and airport public address announcements for the latest information regarding their departures."
