The price of the average pint is forecast to exceed the £5 mark, a rise from the current average of £4.80

Wetherspoons is set to launch a series of discount promotions from June 23, offering pints for as little as £1.49 across 651 of its pubs.

The pub chain will expand its popular Ale Monday promotion to run for three days, allowing customers to purchase discounted pints from Monday through Wednesday.

The move comes as the hospitality sector grapples with significant cost pressures following the Chancellor's Budget measures.

Industry warnings suggest the average price of a pint could exceed £5 for the first time, making Wetherspoons' pricing strategy particularly striking in the current economic climate.

Alongside the extended ale promotion, Wetherspoons will introduce three additional deals. The Small Plates Deal will offer three items for £10, whilst the Pizza Club will provide pizzas for £6.96 with a soft drink or £8.49 with an alcoholic beverage at over 520 locations on Wednesdays.

The Tuesday Club will feature a beer and burger combination for £9.99. Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin said: "We believe that our customers will welcome the new and existing value-for-money club deals in our pubs."

The British Beer and Pub Association has warned that the average price of a pint would surge past £5 for the first time due to cost pressures affecting the sector. The industry body said average prices were expected to rise by approximately 21p.

This forecast reflects the mounting financial challenges facing pub operators following the Chancellor's October Budget.

The measures included raising employers' National Insurance contributions by 1.2 percentage points to 15 per cent and lowering the threshold for paying NI on salaries from £9,100 to £5,000 per year.

The minimum wage for over-21s also increased from £11.44 to £12.21, adding further pressure on hospitality businesses' operating costs.

Wetherspoons boss Sir Tim Martin has confirmed that the chain will be forced to raise the cost of a pint by 20p.

Martin blamed this hike on the Government's fiscal policies. He said: "It means pints in pubs are going to go up by on average 15p to 20p this month.

"The risk to the country is people either in the UK or coming from abroad will think that it’s too expensive to set up a business in the UK."

Fuller's pub chain has also responded to these pressures by implementing a 15p price increase per pint, with chief executive Simon Emeny revealing the rise took effect at the end of March.

The Chiswick-based company, which employs 5,500 staff, faces £8 million in additional staff costs following the Budget measures

The price adjustment came ahead of the increased employer National Insurance contributions and minimum wage rises that took effect in April.

Emeny explained that Fuller's had tried to be "sensitive" with price increases, to "make sure that going to the pub remains an affordable treat".

He indicated the group would keep its pricing "under review" throughout the year.

Wetherspoons has also revealed plans to open multiple new pubs across the UK in a win for Britain's high streets.

The pub and restaurant is set to roll out 15 new locations in the weeks to come after posting a notable surge in sales. Already this year, Wetherspoons has opened two new locations in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and at London Waterloo station.

In 2025, the pub chain will launch 15 new sites with the locations of six of them already being confirmed.

The remaining nine Wetherspoons are being earmarked for opening by July 2026.
