Adam French, Head of News at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said: "It has been a muted week in the savings market with the Moneyfacts Average Savings Rate remaining unchanged at 3.47 per cent.

"However, savers should be warned that the start of a new month looms which tends to bring with it a raft of rate changes – most likely reductions given the recent Bank of England Base Rate cut.

"Locking down a market-leading savings rate is an imperative with less than half (953 out of 2,011) of available savings accounts on the market beating the current CPI inflation figure of 3.8 per cent, which is forecast to hit four per cent before too long.

"The cost-of-living pressure inflation can bring is bad enough, without the real terms’ erosion of the value of our hard-earned savings too."
