Supermarket giant Morrisons is closing stores and cafes in a blow to customers

Morrisons is closing 103 stores, cafes, pharmacies and florists as part of the supermarket giant's latest company overhaul. Will your local shop be affected?

Store closures have swept Britain's high streets in recent years in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis. Earlier this year, Morrisons confirmed 50 cafes would be shutting down in 2025 as part of the restructuring process.

Furthermore, the supermarket chain is planning to close 17 daily convenience stores, 13 florists, four pharmacies and all 18 Market Kitchens.

It should be noted that majority of the 17 daily convenience store closures have already been carried out, with these Morrisons shops ceasing operations in April.

According to Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitiéh, these latest round of closures were a "necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth".

He added: "‘Morrisons Cafés are rightly famous for their great quality well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes.

"In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option."

Last year, Morrisons posted losses of £919million, a decrease from the 2023 losses of £1.3billion. For the pre-tax profit in the year ending October 27, 2024, the supermarket recorded a pre-tax profit worth £2.1billion.
