The discount chain has revealed a total of 68 branches will shut as part of a major restructuring plans

Six additional Poundland shops will permanently close their doors on September 28, marking the latest wave of shutdowns in the discount retailer's extensive restructuring programme.

The closures form part of a broader plan to shutter 68 stores throughout 2025, as the struggling chain attempts to stabilise its finances under new ownership.

Private equity firm Gordon Brothers acquired the budget retailer through its subsidiary Peach Bidco for a nominal £1 in June, inheriting a business that faced imminent financial collapse.

The High Court approved the rescue strategy last month, narrowly preventing the company from exhausting its funds and potentially ceasing operations entirely.

List of the affected branches:

  • West Street, Havant, Hampshire
  • High Street, Newport, Shropshire
  • Dumbarton Road, Glasgow
  • Church Street, Ripley, Derbyshire
  • London Road, Swanley Shopping Centre, Kent
  • Town Meadows Way, Dovefield Retail Park, Uttoxeter

Gordon Brothers has committed to injecting £90 million into the business as part of its turnaround strategy for the 800-store network, which currently employs 14,700 workers across the UK.

The restructuring programme encompasses significant operational changes beyond store closures, including the termination of two distribution centres affecting 350 employees and approximately 1,000 job losses across the retail estate.

The company will cease e-commerce operations from 16 September, transforming its website into a browsing-only platform without purchasing capabilities.

Poundland's customer loyalty programme faces termination on the same date, though members of the Poundland Perks app retain until 15 January 2026 to redeem accumulated reward vouchers.

These digital service reductions accompany broader operational changes, including rent negotiations for underperforming locations and a strategic shift in pricing structure.

The discounter plans to expand its range of £1 products whilst implementing standardised £1, £2 and £3 price points for groceries across all remaining stores this month, reversing its previous move towards varied pricing tiers.

The retailer has disclosed 58 of the 68 locations earmarked for closure throughout the current year, with substantial clearance events underway at numerous branches.

Some stores have implemented reductions reaching 90 per cent, whilst the company's website features heavily discounted seasonal merchandise, including Halloween products priced from 50p.

The budget chain has faced mounting financial pressures in recent years, attributed to shifting consumer behaviour patterns that have impacted profitability across the high street sector.

The restructuring represents a significant contraction for the discount retailer, which previously operated as part of Pepco Group before its sale to the private equity buyers earlier this year.
