The family are now able to save money for their dream move to Australia

A father-of-three has managed to slash his working hours without taking a pay cut, enabling him to spend more time with his children.

Working three jobs to make ends meet, Taj Singh, 27, was struggling to balance his work and home life.

The civil engineer and construction worker even found himself sleeping in his car between jobs as he worked all sorts of hours to provide for his young family.

While working for a flatpack furniture delivery company in the past, Mr Singh came across an opportunity to earn some extra cash when a customer asked him to build the items outside of his shift.

Dreaming of becoming his own boss, the entrepreneur realised it could be a “good business idea” and began researching flatpack assembly companies.

Mr Singh, from Islington in London, later came across the local services marketplace Airtasker and began completing all sorts of tasks via the platform.

“I wanted to spend more time with my kids and my wife, because we barely used to see each other,” he told GB News.

“When I started earning on Airtasker, it was actually way more money, yet I wasn’t spending so much time working.”

Mr Singh gradually began to reduce his three jobs to one, supplementing income with his work via the marketplace.

Now, he works for himself full-time, taking on a wealth of tasks via the platform, bringing in around £500 a week on average.

“I do a variety of tasks. If I’m building wardrobes or something, it’s from £150 to £200. Painting jobs could be £300 to £400.

“It means we can spend more time together as a family. It’s honestly a blessing.”

The opportunities can be life-impacting – Mr Singh even made £7,000 in just three weeks.

The businessman had been working on a painting job worth £2,500, decorating a six-bedroom house in Chelmsford, Essex.

Unbeknown to him, the client had two other properties which needed renovating, which they would give to him, depending on the results of the first job.

Mr Singh worked hard to upskill himself with the help of his friend, and they went on to secure the other two jobs – bringing in a total of £7,000.

Mr Singh and his wife have dreamt of moving to Australia for almost a decade, and this summer, they’re set to make it a reality.

He said: “It’s been a dream since we were young. We’re finally doing it.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Despite the adventure, Mr Singh had assumed he wouldn’t be able to continue with his Airtasker work, leaving him “gutted” – until he found out the firm also operated in Sydney.

Last month, Mr Singh was named a winner in the Top Tasker Awards 2023.

He said: “I never expected the amount of work I’d be able to get on Airtasker. It has allowed me earn the same amount of money but work less, meaning I can spend more time with my children and earn more money to support my family.

“The money covers bills and also allows me to save up for my family’s dream of moving to Australia in the next year.”
