Cancer Research UK will shut 88 of its charity shops across Britain by May as it battles persistent financial pressures, rising operating costs and shifting consumer shopping habits.
The organisation, one of the most recognisable names on the high street, said further closures are expected in 2027 as part of a wider restructuring plan.
Affected locations stretch from Aberdeen to Redruth, with major cities including Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Leeds among those set to lose stores.
It marks a significant moment for the charity retail sector, which has come under mounting strain from online shopping and higher overheads in recent years.
The round of closures form part of a two‑year cost‑cutting programme that will reduce Cancer Research UK’s retail network to around 320 shops nationwide.
The charity expects the consolidation to free up £12.4million that can be redirected towards funding cancer research.
More closures are planned next year as the strategy continues.
Cancer Research said the changes reflect the difficult environment facing charity retailers, who must balance maintaining a visible presence on the high street with ensuring as much money as possible reaches frontline scientific work.

Streamlining its estate, it said, will allow it to operate a leaner and more financially sustainable retail arm.
Despite the widespread closures, Cancer Research UK is also pursuing expansion in a different format.
The charity plans to open 12 larger “superstores” before 2028, signalling a shift towards fewer but more substantial retail sites.
These supersized outlets will offer a broader range of goods and better value than traditional charity shops, with the charity betting that larger, strategically located stores can deliver stronger returns than a wide network of smaller premises.

The superstore model mirrors a broader retail trend towards consolidation into bigger units that can carry more stock and attract higher footfall.
For Cancer Research UK, the dual strategy of shutting underperforming shops while investing in flagship locations represents an attempt to modernise its retail operations and protect its ability to fund vital research.
