Payment outage issues have inflicted many retailers, including H&M, in recent months

H&M is the latest retailer to be impacted by another apparent IT error with customers unable to complete payments when visiting stores.

It is understood the issue has impacted stores for several hours today, but is not yet known if online customers have been affected by this error.

One H&M worker told Mail Online that his store, which was not named, was unable to sell items to consumers for two hours earlier today.

The cause of the outage has yet to be confirmed by the retailer.

A H&M spokesperson said: "We are aware of the problem and are looking into resolving it as quickly as possible. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."

Other retailers, including Marks & Spencer and the Co-Operative, have been impacted by similar IT outages, which has seen businesses unable to process payments from customers.

Notably, M&S lost around £1billion in business due to multiple days of IT issues in late April.

During the same month, the Co-op was forced to shut down parts of its IT systems after hackers tried to illegally access them, but noted it only had a "small impact".

Retailers are not the only institutions being hit by these IT outages with high street banks and building societies also being in the firing line.

London Heathrow, one of the biggest airports in the world, was also inflicted by a costly outage in March.

lan Stephenson-Brown, the CEO of Evolve, broke down what businesses need to do in order to mitigate any future IT issues in the years ahead.

He explained: "News of a global IT outage that has caused problems at airlines, media and banks is a timely reminder that operational resilience should be at the forefront of the business agenda.

"Demonstrating that even large corporations aren't immune to IT troubles, this outage highlights the importance of having distributed data centres and rerouting connectivity that ensures business can continue functioning when cloud infrastructure is disrupted.

"By prioritising both contingency planning and preventative measures, IT systems can be protected.

"I urge business leaders to seriously appraise the systems they have in place to identify potential vulnerabilities before they find themselves the subject of the next IT outages headline."
