Donald Trump's proposed 100 per cent tariff on foreign films could lead to an increase in the BBC licence fee, according to a warning from the shadow culture secretary.

The former US President's plan aims to revitalise America's film industry by imposing steep tariffs on international productions.

This move threatens to severely impact BBC Studios, the corporation's commercial arm, which generates significant revenue from American exports.

The potential financial shortfall could ultimately be passed on to British licence fee payers if the corporation loses access to lucrative US markets.

The UK Government has confirmed it is in "active discussions" with the White House regarding the proposal. BBC Studios earned £454million last year from selling productions to the American market, according to its annual report.

This substantial revenue stream could be jeopardised if Trump's tariff proposal becomes reality.

If these exports become subject to the new tariffs, the resulting decrease in income could necessitate higher licence fees to maintain the BBC's current level of service

Among the BBC's most notable exports to the US is the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who. David Attenborough's acclaimed Frozen Planet documentaries also represent significant American sales for the corporation.

These successful programmes have helped establish BBC Studios as a major player in the international television market. The potential loss of such revenue would create a substantial financial gap for the BBC's commercial operations.

It remains unclear whether Trump's proposed tariffs would apply exclusively to films or would also include television series.

This distinction is crucial for BBC Studios, as its American revenue encompasses both feature-length documentaries and episodic programming.

Shadow culture secretary Stuart Andrew has specifically warned about the potential impact on British households.

He cautioned that the loss of American revenue could leave licence fee payers in the UK footing the bill.

This would effectively mean British viewers subsidising the BBC's commercial losses in the US market.

The warning comes at a sensitive time for BBC funding discussions.

The corporation already faces challenges regarding its funding model in the digital age.

Trump's proposed tariffs could therefore have direct consequences for millions of British households if implemented.

A BBC TV Licence is a fee required in the UK to watch live TV on any channel (including BBC), pay TV services (like Sky), or use BBC iPlayer, regardless of the device. The current cost is £174.50 for a colour licence and £58.50 for a black and white licence.
