Aldi now has more than 1,000 stores in the UK

Aldi has revealed the 13 areas where the retailer is hoping to open stores "as a priority", after announcing plans to open hundreds more shops in the UK.

In its latest "wish list", the supermarket said it is looking to build new stores in London.

Now the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket, Aldi recently announced a long-term plan to run 1,500 stores across the UK.

They said there was a particular interest in sites within the M25 due to the strong demand for the supermarket in the capital.

As part of a £500million investment to open more stores within the M25, Aldi is hoping to open another 100 sites, creating around 3,500 new jobs in the region.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: “We want to make high quality, affordable food accessible to all, but there are still many areas in the capital that don’t have access to an Aldi and, as a result, too many people have to make do with big prices at the traditional supermarkets.

“The locations we’ve identified are places where there is demand for our stores and we are committed to continue investing until we can bring our quality products and unbeatable prices to as many people as possible.”

Aldi said some examples of priority locations where Aldi is searching for sites include:

  • Bromley
  • Beckenham
  • Richmond
  • Walthamstow
  • Wanstead
  • Winchmore Hill
  • Notting Hill
  • Chelsea
  • Kensington
  • Chiswick
  • Highbury
  • Hackney
  • Barnet

As it is a "wish list", it's not confirmed that Aldi will open stores in these areas.

Aldi said property agents are being offered a finder's fee of either 1.5 per cent of a freehold price or 10 per cent of the first year's rent for leasehold sites, for recommending a previously unknown site.

The retailer is seeking locations which are big enough for its standard 20,000 square foot stores.

These sites would need around 100 dedicated parking spaces, and preferably be on a prominent main road and have good visibility and access.

Aldi said it's also looking for sites for its Aldi Local stores, which are around 5,000 square feet in size.

The supermarket recently opened stores in Cumbernauld, Reading and Coatbridge.
