The honourary president of the former Brexit party is running for MP

On Monday afternoon, Nigel Farage announced that he would be returning to politics confirming he would be taking over as leader of Reform UK.

Farage said he would be standing in Clacton - a constituency won by the Conservatives in 2019.

The former Brexit leader’s move to run as a candidate has shaken up the Conservative Party and is a “game changer” for the upcoming General Election.

Farage’s entrance into the election is trouble for the Conservative leader Rishi Sunak as Farage performs better than Sunak among Tory voters.

According to a public opinion poll by YouGov, Farage is 56 per cent favourable amongst Tory voters while Sunak only scored 47 per cent.

The former Brexit leader is not only more popular amongst Tory voters but more favourable among all voters.

Sunak only scored a 26 per cent favourable rating among all voters whereas Farage gained a 30 per cent rating.

Another poll conducted in January 2024 by Survation found that if Farage stood in Clacton, Reform would win the majority with 38 per cent.

With Farage as the leader of Reform, Conservative campaigners are worried that he might split the vote in some seats the Tories are struggling to hold on to, or ones that they previously thought were safe.

With that in mind, does Farage’s decision mark the end of the Conservative Party?
