The Oxford Union is facing backlash after its incoming president appeared to celebrate Charlie Kirk's killing.
George Abaraonye sent texts to a group chat on Wednesday evening in the wake of the shooting of the Conservative activist, which included: “Charlie Kirk got shot, let’s f------ go” – a common celebratory phrase among Gen Z.
Another message, believed to be sent from the incoming Oxford Union president’s Instagram account, stated: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool”.
After the leaked messages, which have since been deleted, sparked furious backlash across social media, Mr Abaraonye set his account to private, preventing anyone from accessing his posts.
Despite the Union facing increasing pressure to remove him from his post, Baroness Valerie Amos, who is the Master of University College at the University of Oxford, has said Mr Abaraonye's comments do not violate any relevant policies - including free speech.
In a message seen by GB News, Baroness Amos said: "Though Mr Abaraonye's comments are abhorrent, they do not contravene the College's policies on free speech, or any other relevant policy.
"Therefore, no disciplinary action will be taken."
