The instant-messaging app will add a new feature which could prove useful to users

WhatsApp users have been told to update a key setting to lower their chances of becoming a victim of cyber crime.

The Silence Unknown Callers update will prevent calls from coming in if the number is not a known contact on a user's phone.

It will reduce the chances of cold callers and scammers contacting WhatsApp users.

In a blog post, WhatsApp said: “Silence Unknown Callers is designed to give you more privacy and control of your incoming calls.

“It helps to automatically screen out spam, scams, and calls from unknown people for increased protection.”

WhatsApp users will still be able to see if an unknown contact has tried to call.

The attempted call will be added to the phone’s call log rather than appearing on screen.

META founder Mark Zuckerberg also said: “You can now automatically silence incoming calls from unknown contacts on WhatsApp for even more privacy and control.”

WhatsApp users hoping to make the most of the update have been urged to head to the settings menu and tap privacy.

A toggle will appear saying Silence Unknown Callers once the update is installed.

WhatsApp is also due to introduce a Privacy Checkup function.

The function will enable users to make sure they are aware of the options they have to protect themselves while using the app.

It will include step-by-step guides to highlight how to use important privacy settings.

Users should select Start Checkup in their privacy settings and then navigate through the layers which will strengthen security on calls, messages and other personal information.
