The award-winning actress Tilda Swinton enjoys a secluded life in the Scottish Highlands

Tilda Swinton shot to fame in the early days of her acting career and has enjoyed unparalleled success ever since.

In 2005, the British actress was praised for her bone-chilling portrayal of the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia before going on to film two sequels in 2008 and 2010.

Swinton is also known for her off-centred roles in blockbusters like The Beach and We Need To Talk About Kevin, which have earned countless nominations over the years.

Despite her roaring success, the actress has continued to keep the details of her private life very quiet, particularly since moving to the Scottish Highlands.

The Oscar-winning actress secured a 118-year-old property in the fishing port of Nairn, located in a region known for its soaring hills and sweeping landscapes.

Swinton reportedly purchased the property for £650,000 before subsequently launching a renovation project to add rooms and other amenities to the estate.

An initial set of improvements was rejected by the local community, who complained the star’s designs would have been “very strong and quite brutal”.

In 2020, the star’s abode made headlines after Swinton applied for permission to have the window on her B-listed property moved over privacy concerns.

The Narnia actress was eventually granted permission to build an extension at the rear of the building, allowing her to add an outhouse to the building.

Because the windows on the extension allowed passersby to peek into the property, she made an additional request to the Highland Council to have them lowered.

The renovation project was taken as a sign that the mother-of-two intends to make the house her “long-term sole family home”.

The actress is understood to have lived at the abode with her partner Sandro Kopp, a German painter she has known since 2004, who is 18 years younger than her.

It is also understood that the actress lived at the property with her twin sons Honor and Xavier, whose father is the Scottish artist John Byrne.

The region’s official website, Nairn Scotland, states that the village is “an ancient fishing port and market town about 17 miles east of Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands."

It adds: “Nairn is the 3rd largest settlement in the Highlands and is well-known as a seaside resort with two golf courses, award-winning beaches and arts/theatre venues.”

The vicinities feature several attractions including the museum and Community Center, with shops and local eateries attracting visitors too.

The star disclosed during an interview with The Guardian that one of her lifelong goals was to own a beach by the seaside, with some dogs.

Nairns is frequently described as the ideal base from which to discover the Scottish Highlands, as it's located a short distance away from Inverness Airport.
