Oil cleansers clear debris lodged deep within the pores without disrupting the skin’s moisture balance, an expert explained

As the body's largest organ, the skin is prone to changes that can become a hyperfixation over time. But adjusting cleansing techniques can reverse unwanted changes.

A skin care expert has told GB News why oil-based cleansers are among the beauty industry's most trusted tools for tackling large pores.

"Oil cleansers work in harmony with the skin’s natural sebum, which makes them highly effective at drawing out pore-clogging impurities that water-based cleansers often miss," Founder and CEO of Dr Althea, Evelyn Lee, shared.

"Oils have a unique ability to bind with excess sebum, sunscreen, fine dust and even waterproof makeup, helping to clear debris lodged deep within the pores without disrupting the skin’s moisture balance.

"This deep but gentle cleansing helps pores look more refined and less visible over time, without the tightness or irritation that harsher cleansers can cause."

The mechanism involves oils attaching to surplus sebum, sunscreen residue, microscopic particles and waterproof cosmetics, helping dislodge substances from within pore structures.

In addition, this helps maintain skin's natural moisture equilibrium, sparing skin care enthusiasts the dryness or discomfort associated with more aggressive cleansing products.

Particular plant-derived oils demonstrate exceptional efficacy in improving pore appearance, according to Ms Lee.

"Grape Seed Oil, for instance, is lightweight, rich in linoleic acid, and has natural astringent properties, making it ideal for balancing oil production and minimising the appearance of enlarged pores," Ms Lee explained.

Soybean oil represents another valuable component, similarly rich in linoleic acid, while supporting the skin's hydration levels.

One factor all these oils have in common is their ability to deliver comprehensive cleansing while maintaining skin nourishment, avoiding the stripping effect common with conventional products.

Beyond cleansing alone, subsequent skincare can amplify pore-refining benefits, Ms Lee explained, with products incorporating vitamin C, niacinamide, and Camellia Sinensis leaf water particularly effective companions to oil cleansing routines.

A combination approach addresses both immediate impurity removal and longer-term pore refinement.

This sustained approach ensures pores remain refined and less prominent over extended periods, establishing oil cleansing as a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix.

"Consistency is key with oil cleansing," Ms Lee highlighted. "By using an oil cleanser daily, you continuously prevent the buildup of sebum and impurities that lead to congestion and enlarged pores.

"Many people notice an improvement in skin clarity and texture within two to three weeks of regular use, but more significant changes in pore visibility usually appear after a month of consistent cleansing, as the skin’s natural cell turnover cycle is about 28 days.

"Over time, this routine not only keeps pores clear but also supports a stronger skin barrier, helping pores look refined and less noticeable in the long term."
