Looking youthful might not just be down to how much beauty sleep you get each night

Although it is a natural part of ageing, you might be on the look-out for easy hacks to boost your youthfulness and banish fine lines from your complexion.

Thankfully, one TikToker has shared her 73-year-old mother’s tips on ways to keep looking young and spritely as you get older - and it's really very simple.

Beyond getting enough beauty sleep each night to let your body reset for the day ahead, it might be crucial to make a single change to your sleeping position too.

Sharing the hack online, the daughter, who goes by @thedavisstandard on the video-sharing platform, keeps followers updated on her mum’s latest wisdom.

Announcing it as a “key anti-aging habit”, she advised to “never use a pillow” while sleeping on your back”. Instead, grab a small towel, roll it up “at the perfect height” aligned with your spine to support your neck.

“My mum said this is a way to not have wrinkles on your face and also it’s really good for your neck because your head is heavy,” the guru added.

While she explained that she was a “side sleeper”, her mum informed her that she must learn how to make the bedtime change to banish wrinkles.

Due to the neck's lifted position, less contact with a cotton or linen pillowcase will reduce the likelihood of creasing your face overnight, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles in the long-term.

"As far as the skin-friendliest way to face, sleeping on your back with your head facing out and centre will definitely reduce the risk of developing sleep-related skin problems to the greatest degree," Dr Rachel Maiman told Glamour.

Meanwhile, the sleep experts at Dreams reiterated that sleeping on your side or stomach can affect your complexion, including wrinkles and decreased fullness.

What's more, a study from the Aesthetic Surgery Journal assessed "the possibility that compression during sleep not only results in wrinkles but may also contribute to facial skin expansion".

The researchers found that sleeping position can cause wrinkles, although this is also compounded by a number of other factors, including age, skin elasticity and more biological reasons. Additionally, the study pointed out that we have little control over the way we sleep.

Experts have backed the guru's claim that sleeping with extra neck support can lessen cervical pain

Additionally, experts have supported the guru's claim that sleeping with extra neck support can combat neck and spinal pain.

Sleep Foundation claimed that those who sleep on their back might seek some relief by adding a small pillow at the base of the neck, to make sure the head stays in a neutral position.

Even further, they recommended "placing a pillow beneath the knees or thighs can keep the muscles along the spine flat and relax muscles in the neck".

However, if you are experiencing neck and back pain, it's best to speak to your GP or another medical professional to rule out any health conditions first.
