Changing your hair parting can have a transformative effect on your appearance according to one aesthetician

Time changes the way hair grows and skin cells reproduce, and embracing these shifts helps us age gracefully.

Choosing a haircut that complements your face shape, however, can have a transformative effect at any age.

Sometimes, even just a few minor changes to the length and style of a hairdo can knock years off the face.

People over 50 seeking a youthful boost should consider a middle parting and more length, according to one aesthetician.

Aesthetician Nicole Smith says these two modifications can be transformative for the appearance.

“The hair theory is real,” said in an online clip. “I’m an aesthetic physician assistant and I share all things anti-ageing and beauty.

“This is the idea that people may perceive you differently based on how you style your hair.

“Your hairstyle could be making you look 10 years younger or 10 years older. Keeping up with hair trends can create the illusion of a much younger you.”

She went on: “Adding a middle part hairstyle and some length can contribute to a much more youthful look.”

As they get older, many women cut their hair shorter for both practical and cultural purposes.

But to prove her point that long hair suits women of all ages, Nicole photoshopped two different hairstyles onto Catherine Zeta-Jones, confirming that length really can knock years off the face.

While long healthy hair can enhance appearance, experts argue that it can also risk pulling down the face’s features if left to grow too long.

Experts at Touch Ups Salon said: “The first big mistake we make is assuming that long hair always makes us look younger.

“Long hair tends to hide the details of one’s face and important facial features like the lips, nose and smile are important to show off.”

Hairstylist Justin Hickox cautions that women sporting long hairstyles should avoid one-length hair, as this can prematurely age the appearance too.

Hairstyles that are widely recommended for women over the age of 60 typically frame the face.

For mature women who want to maintain long hair, adding layers is a promising technique to avoid ageing the appearance.

Layers work to accentuate a person’s best facial attributes and can give the hair more dimension, depth and volume.
