Hair texture and thickness alterations are common age-related concerns, but social media influencers demonstrate time and time again that these changes can be successfully addressed with the right products.
Romy, a content creator (romy_ton) on TikTok, aged 43, recently revealed her method for restoring lustre to her previously dull and damaged strands.
The approach revolves mainly around adopting sulfate-free glossing shampoos while simultaneously decreasing how often she cleanses her hair, she explained.
Over time, this results in noticeably shinier, healthier-looking locks, as well as improved growth patterns.

She told her followers: "I'm 43 years old, and it is possible to have shiny hair at my age. I'm going to show you the products that I used to transform my hair from dull to shiny, and healthy, to the point where it actually grows and it looks good."
"I wanted my hair to grow, but look good being a certain length. I always had my hair shorter because I thought that's where it looked the healthiest, because I wasn't taking care of my hair."
After years of maintaining shorter styles, Romy discovered that proper product selection and modified washing routines could revitalise her hair's appearance.
"I incorporated one or two new things. Number one is we're going to use a glossing shampoo. Sulfate-free is important too; you want products that are not harsh on your hair," she advised.
"I don't wash my hair every single day, that's another thing."
Traditional shampoos containing sulfates act as aggressive cleansing agents that remove the scalp's protective oils, leading to dehydration and brittleness.
These formulations can also trigger scalp sensitivity and exacerbate existing dermatological issues.
In contrast, gentler sulfate-free alternatives preserve the hair's natural moisture barrier while effectively cleansing, making them particularly beneficial for those experiencing dryness or managing chemically processed hair.
The milder ingredients help maintain hydration levels and minimise frizzy textures that often accompany mature hair.
This can also help individuals with sensitive skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea, who frequently find sulfate-free options less irritating to their scalp and surrounding skin.
Glossing shampoos like the one Romy uses achieve their shine-enhancing effects through specialised conditioning components that adhere to each hair strand.

Glossing shampoos create a protective layer that smooths down the cuticle scales
| GETTYThis creates a protective layer that smooths down the cuticle scales, allowing light to reflect more uniformly across the hair surface.
The conditioning agents fill in microscopic irregularities along the hair shaft, resulting in a sleeker appearance and enhanced luminosity.
This coating mechanism also helps lock in colour molecules, which is what makes the products particularly effective for maintaining vibrancy in both treated and natural hair.
The smoothing action reduces friction between strands and contributes to reduced tangling, while promoting an overall healthier appearance.
