Shampooing, conditioning, and brushing your hair may all feel like second nature, but according to an expert, simple mistakes could be detrimental

When it comes to your hair, a trip to the salon can be transformative, giving you the cut, colour, and style of your dreams.

However, in between visits, the health of your strands is actually down to you – and there's a lot you can get wrong.

According to Fresha's leading hairstylist, Danielle Louise, some of the most common hair habits are causing more harm than good.

She said: "People often blame their hair type or genetics for dryness and breakage, but in reality, it's the way they're using their products.

"You can have the best shampoo in the world, but if you're applying it wrong, you're damaging your hair every wash day."

Here, the expert shared the hair care mistakes you're probably making and how to fix them.

Spraying dry shampoo like hairspray

"Most people coat the top of their hair, which builds up residue and leaves strands brittle.

"Instead, focus on the roots, leaving it to absorb for 30 seconds and then massage through before brushing out."

Applying conditioner to the scalp

"Conditioner should never go near your roots as it clogs follicles and causes greasiness.

"Apply it from the mid-lengths to ends only, then rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the cuticle."

For shampooing success, always emulsify the product in your hands first

Pouring shampoo straight on

"If you don't mix it with water first, shampoo can strip certain areas and dry out the scalp.

"Always emulsify the product in your palms before applying evenly across your scalp."

Using heat protectant too late

"Spraying protectant after styling does nothing to prevent damage.

"Apply heat protectant before grabbing any heat tools, even for blow-drying."

Wet hair is more prone to breakage than dry hair, so take special care of it post-shower

Brushing wet hair incorrectly

"Brushing from the roots when your hair is wet causes instant breakage.

"To avoid this, use a wide-tooth comb and start from the ends, working up gently."

Leaving hair masks on too long

"Leaving a mask on for hours can overload hair with protein or moisture, leaving it limp or brittle.

"Always stick to the time on the label — usually between five to 10 minutes.

Skipping UV protection

"Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of colour fade and dryness, yet few use SPF for hair.

"Make sure to use UV-protective leave-in products or wear a hat in strong sunlight."

Finishing with heat, not cool air

"Many people 'set' styles using hot air, which seals in frizz.

"For a chic, sleek look, finish with a cool shot to lock in shine and smoothness."

When dealing with a hair-mare, many people reach for a whole host of serums, sprays, and more.

However, if your technique is wrong, no amount of hair-boosting products will save your strands.

According to Ms Louise, a few minor tweaks to your routine can make a "huge difference".

"Most people don't need more products; they just need to use them properly," the expert concluded.
