A gardening guru has named the most colourful plants to brighten up your space this summer

While fleets of Britons will be flocking to the beach as sunnier skies emerge, others will be spending summer days in their gardens.

For those looking to spend more time in their own outdoor space, a vibrant shake-up may be in order before the summer is in full swing.

Garden centre manager at Jacksons Nurseries, Hayden Salt, declared that now is the best time to "put in a bit of time in the garden that will pay off spectacularly".

He added that planting a bit of extra colour around the garden can help to liven up your space at home, leaving no need to venture outside during the warm spell.

He advised that bedding plants and perennials make great additions to borders.

Marigolds, cosmos, cornflowers, agapanthus, peonies and foxgloves are all excellent colourful extras to add a decorative display to your back garden.

"These are best arranged in groups of the same variety but in odd numbers to create a naturalistic appearance. And it's worth planting taller varieties at the back to make them more attractive on the eye."

However, for a more formal look, the gardening expert urged green thumbs to plant in linear groupings in blocks of bold colours.

Meanwhile, for a "more informal cottage garden style", plants can be spaced out more sporadically between shrubs and small trees.

Hayden also recommended prepping the ground by removing weeds with a fork. Once that’s done, it's important to break up any bigger blocks of soil so that the plants have a "good structure" to grow into over time.

Manure, multi-purpose compost - alongside a reliable soil improver - can then be raked into the soil to enrich the bed.

However, he emphasised that it's vital to mix the material in deeply so that the roots can absorb crucial nutrients and water once they grow further down.

Some of the most popular types of bedding plants for adding colour and interest to borders are begonia, geranium, lobelia, fuchsia and marigold, Hayden suggested.

For those who prefer perennials, bleeding heart plants - which also go by the name Lamprocapnos - are in flower at the moment, and blossom with beautiful, heart-shaped flowers in varying shades of pink, white, red and yellow.

"Other perennials that are flowering now include delphiniums, salvia and some varieties of Euphorbia, while Aquilegia, Phlox and Astilbe will start flowering over the next few weeks,” the expert added.

Shrubs are also a lovely way to add further variety, with the expert recommending Photinias for "lovely new foliage colours that are coming through now", and rhododendrons and azaleas, which look best in May.

The gardening guru concluded: "Spending a little time getting your planting and planning right will make a huge difference."

Throughout the summer, he mentioned that extra watering sessions on hot, dry and windy days - many of which are forecast throughout the month - were vital.
