In 2024, the supermarket provided 404,499 free meals

Tesco will reintroduce complimentary meals for children at its cafés and coffee shops throughout the UK during the summer school break.

The initiative requires adults to make a minimum purchase of 65p while presenting their Clubcard to secure the free meal for youngsters.

The programme operates Monday through Friday in its 328 locations, with weekend days excluded from the offer.

Participating families can select from various meal categories, including breakfast options, hot food choices, and pick-and-mix combinations for their children at no additional cost when accompanying adults make qualifying purchases at the supermarket's dining facilities.

The breakfast menu features dishes such as egg and soldiers, beans and soldiers, and pancakes.

Main course selections include omega-3 fish fingers, oven-baked chicken strips, and pork sausages.

The pick-and-mix option provides a comprehensive meal package containing a sandwich, a beverage, two snack items, and fresh fruit.

This variety ensures nutritious and filling choices are available throughout the day, from morning meals to evening dining.

Last year, Tesco distributed 404,499 complimentary meals to youngsters and their families throughout school holiday periods. This year's initiative hopes to replicate the success of 2024.

The retailer's current scheme forms part of broader efforts by the supermarket to reduce household expenses during challenging economic times.

Beyond the café initiative, families can maximise savings by converting their Clubcard points for use with partner businesses.

These include dining establishments like PizzaExpress and entertainment venues such as Cineworld, providing additional opportunities for affordable family activities during the school break.

The combination of free children's meals and voucher exchange options demonstrates the retailer's commitment to supporting families managing holiday costs.

Head of communities at Tesco, Claire De Silva, said: "We know that household budgets can be really stretched over the school summer holidays, so offering free meals to children during this time is just one of the ways we can support families."

Tesco's cost-cutting initiative comes as Morrisons introduces a "purse-pleasing" café deal for over 60s.

Available now in 344 locations, the exclusive offering aims to make customers' pensions go further.

Eligible customers can enjoy a Small Breakfast, including a sausage, bacon, fried egg, hash brown, Heinz Baked Beanz, toast and butter, and any refillable hot drink for just £6.

Not just reserved for mornings, the breakfast feast will be available all day. What's more, it will save Club 60 members up to £2.50.

Morrisons' lunchtime favourites, featured in the £10 Afternoon Meal Deal, include fish and chips, bread with butter, a slice of cake, and a hot drink, with savings of up to £3.25.

This comes as 49 per cent of older people admit to cutting back on meeting friends due to financial pressures.

Morrisons said: "The new offer aims to support, providing a social community space with hearty food at purse-pleasing prices."
