Plastic contamination has sparked the food recall at three major supermarkets

A popular snack has been recalled from shelves over concerns it may contain pieces of plastic. The batches concerned are sold at several major supermarkets.

A recall notice states the ‘My Mini Pots’ desserts by the brand Ambrosia should ‘not be eaten’ and returned as a ‘precaution’.

The mini pots are sold at many British supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

All affected products have been removed from shelves, with recall notices to be displayed at point-of-sale.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: “The above batches of Ambrosia My Mini Rice, My Mini Custard and My Mini 30% Less Fat Custard are being recalled due to the possible presence of plastic pieces.

“Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batches. No other Ambrosia products are affected. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The company, owned by Premier Foods, is one of the UK’s largest food producers. Mr Kilpling, Angel Delight, and Homepride are owned by the same firm.

“The possible presence of plastic presents a possible choking hazard and makes these products unsafe to eat,” warned the FSA.

“If you have bought any of the above products, do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

The three products concerned are:

  • Ambrosia My Mini Rice; pack size: 6 x 55g
  • Ambrosia My Mini Custard; pack size: 6 x 55g
  • Ambrosia My Mini 30% Less Sugar Custard; pack size: 6 x 55g

A Premier Foods spokesperson said: “These products have been sold to UK and ROI major retailers, discounters, wholesalers, Foodservice, convenience stores, and UK distributors for further export.

“We take food safety extremely seriously and are working closely with the Food Standards Agency (FSA). We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to assure customers of our continued commitment to the highest standards of food safety and product quality.”

The health warning comes shortly after Tesco recalled a meat product amid a risk of salmonella. Cupcakes were also recalled due to undeclared allergens.

In a statement, the supermarket giant said: "Karro McGees is recalling a specific date code of Cookstown butter and herbs stuffed pork fillet wrapped in bacon 700g, due to detection of salmonella in the product.

“If not cooked properly, this may pose a risk to customer health.”

Asda has also pulled its Frozen Crispy Hash Browns (800g) from its shelves over allergen concerns.

The supermarket chain explained in a statement that some packs that include Potato Croquettes may contain milk and wheat “which are not mentioned on the label”.
