An urgent warning has been shared for items sold in retailers including Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and more

Various sandwiches, wraps and salads have been recalled due to possible contamination by E. coli.

The items have been recalled as a precaution as they could cause a potentially dangerous illness.

The Food Standards Agency states: "The possible presence of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC) in the products listed.

"Symptoms caused by STEC organisms include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain, and sometimes haemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal."

Greencore Group has recalled foods sold in Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and more. Manufacturer Samworth Brothers Manton Wood has also recalled food sold in Tesco and at OneStop as a precaution.

The FSA added: "Greencore Group is taking the precautionary step of recalling various sandwiches, wraps and salads because of possible contamination with E. coli.

"E.coli has not been detected in the products listed but are being recalled as a precaution."

This comes as an E. coli outbreak that's resulted in at least 37 people being admitted to hospital was reported earlier this week.

Supermarkets have shared statements regarding the urgent recall.

Aldi states: "As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling a number of sandwiches and wraps from UK supermarkets, including Aldi Eat & Go Chicken Fajita Triple Wraps due to the possible presence of E. coli. No E. coli has been found in this product.

"We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation."

Asda added: "Asda are taking the precautionary step of recalling various sandwiches and wraps because of possible contamination with E. coli. No E. coli has been found in the products."

Morrisons stated: "Please do not eat this product and return it to your nearest store for a full refund. We don't need a receipt.

We are asking customers that have purchased the above products not to consume them and to return them to their nearest Sainsbury's store, where they will receive a full refund.

Tesco said: "Our supplier Samworth Brothers Manton Wood is recalling various sandwich and wrap lines on a precautionary basis, due to possible contamination with E. coli. No E. coli has been detected in any of these products. No other products are affected by this recall."

The FSA added advice for anyone who has the affected items. It said: "If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund."

What is E. coli?

E. coli is a bacteria that is found in the bowels. It is most dangerous when there is an infection.

Anyone can pick up an infection and it is most commonly spread if you do not wash your hands properly. Older people, diabetics, those who are dehydrated or who suffer from gallbladder or kidney stones are most at risk.

NHS states: "Symptoms of an E. coli infection can be different depending on where the infection is.

"If the E. coli has entered your blood and caused a bloodstream infection (bacteraemia) some of the main symptoms are: a very high temperature, shivers and chills, not passing urine all day and being more confused than usual."

E. coli strains like Stec can cause illness and there have been 211 cases associated with this since June 11.
