The supermarket will deliver a twist on an Australian classic

In a win for sweet-toothed shoppers, Australian lamingtons have finally arrived on British high streets.

Genesis Bakery, from Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, has created the treats exclusively for M&S stores across the UK.

The bakery has developed two tempting varieties of the classic Australian cake, one featuring chocolate and coconut, while the other combines caramelised biscuit flavours.

Each lamington is hand-finished by the skilled Genesis team. The Chocolate & Coconut variety features buttermilk-enriched chocolate sponge wrapped in chocolate sauce and coconut flakes, topped with hand-piped jam and buttercream.

Meanwhile, the Caramelised Biscuit option offers rich chocolate sponge covered in chocolate sauce and golden biscuit crumbs. It's finished with hand-piped buttercream and salted caramel sauce. Both varieties come in packs of two for £4.

The introduction of lamingtons to M&S shelves forms part of the retailer's wider strategy of bringing international flavours to British shoppers.

"Combining craftsmanship with innovation, [we] will deliver an indulgent twist on an iconic Australian classic," the supermarket pledged.

It follows the successful launch of Magic Coffee in 2023, which was inspired by Melbourne's coffee culture.

The lamington is the latest in a long-standing partnership between Genesis Bakery and M&S, spanning more than 15 years and 22 product lines.

The Northern Irish bakery has delivered an array of "seasonal showstoppers", the supermarket revealed, plus the beloved Mini Fruity Cupcake Selections.

Speaking about the latest innovation, commercial and product development director at Genesis Bakery, JP Lyttle, commented: "We are incredibly proud to be producing these new Lamingtons for M&S.

"Our long-standing partnership has always been built on shared values of quality and innovation.

"Bringing this iconic treat to the UK high street is a testament to what we can achieve together, and we're excited to continue investing in our people and our community here in Magherafelt."

Product developer at M&S, Alice Birch, added: "Lamingtons are the most iconic cake from down under, and it's hugely exciting to be the first to bring our version of this beloved Aussie classic to the UK high street.

"It's also fantastic to have them made here in Northern Ireland by Genesis Bakery – we knew the care the team put into every product would help deliver that touch of M&S magic.

"Our lamingtons are extra special – hand-finished with toppings and super indulgent thanks to the rich chocolate sponge and caramelised biscuit flavour.

"So, if you’re feeling like an Aussie-inspired adventure, make sure to give them a try at your local M&S store."

The launch of M&S' lamingtons comes as the supermarket announces a new caramel sauce featuring its first-ever sweet Marmite.

The retailer told shoppers: "Whether you love it or hate it, you have to try it. Trust us. It works."

But the "intriguing" addition has certainly sparked debate, with reactions ranging from "I love Marmite, but this is repulsive" to "This sounds delicious".
