With the big day fast approaching, new data shows how the nation likes to celebrate Christmas at the dinner table

For many Britons, Christmas dinner is the best meal of the year – a feast that truly lives up to the occasion.

A firm favourite year upon year, turkey reigns supreme on festive tables across the nation. According to this year's YouGov Big Survey on Christmas dinner, 57 per cent of people tuck into the bird as their main course.

But turkey isn't the only star of the show. The market research company found that roughly a quarter of Britons opt for chicken or beef instead, while 15 per cent enjoy Christmas ham and 10 per cent serve up other pork joints.

Plant-based options have their fans too, appearing on 13 per cent of Christmas tables – though most households still include meat alongside them.

Beyond the main event, no Christmas dinner is complete without the classic accompaniments, with Britons clearly agreeing on the essentials.

YouGov said: "With a roast dinner the overwhelming norm for the festive feast, around eight in 10 Britons (79-81 per cent) will be accompanying their Christmas Day meal with roast potatoes or gravy."

Carrots make an appearance at 76 per cent of festive tables, while stuffing and pigs in blankets feature for roughly two-thirds of households.

The same can be said for Brussels sprouts; love them or hate them, they make an appearance on 68 per cent of dinner tables come December 25.

Parsnips prove popular too, landing on 62 per cent of plates, and nearly half of Britons love adding Yorkshire puddings to their Christmas spread – rising to 68 per cent among those serving beef.

Where you live in the UK can shape what lands on your Christmas plate, and mashed potato reveals a fascinating divide.

YouGov said: "While it is a component of around half of Christmas dinners in the North (51 per cent) or Midlands (48 per cent), and more than four in 10 of those in Scotland (42 per cent) or Wales (44 per cent), just 21 per cent of those in London and 18 per cent in the South will have it."

Not satisfied with roasties alone, 35 per cent of Britons include mash in their Christmas dinner.

Other sides show less regional variation – a third of households serve peas, while cauliflower cheese accompanies 27 per cent of festive feasts.

When it comes to dessert, traditional choices still dominate, though Britons are less united on their sweet finale.

Christmas pudding takes the crown as the nation's favourite festive afters, enjoyed by 41 per cent of households.

Mince pies follow at 31 per cent, while nearly a quarter of people prefer something savoury, reaching for the cheeseboard instead.

Yule logs, trifles and Christmas cakes round off the celebrations for 17-19 per cent of Britons, with sticky toffee pudding appealing to nine per cent.
