Bags of spinach are being pulled from shelves over fears they are unsafe to eat

Asda has issued an urgent food recall after bags of spinach were found to contain "pieces of metal", making it "unsafe to eat".

Customers who bought 450g packets of Taj Chopped Spinach have been advised to contact the care team at Taj Food.

The product, sold exclusively at Asda and other select retailers, is being pulled from shelves despite a "very low possibility of the product containing metal pieces", Taj Foods Ltd explained.

The Food Standards Agency announced the recall, stating: "Taj Foods is recalling Taj Chopped Spinach because it may contain pieces of metal.

"The possible presence of metal makes this produce unsafe to eat. The affected product has only been sold in Asda and Eden Farms."

"Point of sales notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product.

"These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product."

Anyone who has bought these items can return them in stores for a full refund. No receipt is required for such returns, according to the alert by the Food Standards Agency.

Asda told customers: "This is a precautionary recall due to the possibility of the product containing small pieces of metal.

"If you have purchased Taj Chopped Spinach 450g with Best Before dates 01-2026 (Jan 2026), please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt.

"We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information, please contact Asda Customer Relations – 0800 952 0101."

It comes several weeks after the supermarket chains issued a recall on a frozen food product over undeclared allergens.

Customers were warned that allergens in Asda’s Frozen Crispy Hash Browns 800g could cause symptoms including hives and vomiting in some cases.

The supermarket announced that the product could pose a risk to anyone suffering from coeliac disease.

When there is a problem with a food product, the Food Standards Agency can either withdraw the product from supermarket shelves or recall it - asking customers to return the product.
