Some learner drivers have been forced to travel more than 100 miles to skip test waiting times after Covid

Learner drivers have been told about a little known “cheat code” app which could help them pass their tests sooner than expected.

Britons hoping to get behind the wheel might have been given a helping hand as driving centres continue to struggle to cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The virus has caused huge delays for exams as some parts of the country continue to witness bulging backlogs.

Dominic Remmers, 18, from Harpenden in Hertfordshire, opted to travel 107 miles to Derby to sit his driving test.

He had otherwise been warned he would be joining the end of a three-month queue if he was to take his test in nearby St Albans.

Dominic used a new “cheat code” app which helps plot the test routes of every driving centre in Great Britain.

The Driving Test Routes App, created by Route-Led LLP, provides learner drivers with routes commonly used by invigilators.

It works by creating routes via satellite navigation systems only.

The app, which covers all 243 driving centres in the country, is powered by test route information shared by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

It launched on both Apple and Android in June 2021.

The app has reportedly grown by eight per cent since its launch.

It costs a monthly subscription of £12.99 for one test centre but adding additional centres will cost a one-off price of £9.99.

Dominic told This is Money: “My dad and I went up to Derby the day before my test and we practiced routes from the app.

“This boosted my confidence that I wasn't going to get caught out on the exam. The next day, I took my test and passed.”

He added: 'The exam route ended up being a combination of the routes in the Driving Test Routes app so I was pretty pleased I had managed to practice them the day before.

“'I was really happy that I switched test centres as it reduced my wait time by three months.

“'I think some people are scared to try slots at different places around the country but I would just say that, if you're good enough to pass your test, you're good enough to drive anywhere in the country.”
