Walking can burn 200 to 500 calories per hour, depending on the intensity of your workout

Walking is a great way to burn extra calories without too much effort as it can easily be incorporated into your day-to-day routine.

Speaking to GB News, a certified fitness instructor and sports nutritionist explained how to get more out of your walks.

All steps count, whether you are using the stairs instead of the lift, walking to work or taking the dog out.

However, you will burn more calories - and ultimately lose more weight - by varying how you move, an expert explained.

Walking on a steep slope, like uphill, and picking up the pace will help you burn fat in less time.

Fitness instructor Alicia Jones said how to burn more calories with the help of a treadmill, especially as you age.

This can be more effective and also more gentle on the joints, she explained. Alicia said: "A treadmill is one of the best ways that older adults who are new to climbing or steep walking can begin.

"When on the treadmill, you can adjust the incline to your starting level. I suggest 3.5 to start. From there, as you get more conditioned, you can increase the incline."

The fitness expert said this is a great way to start for those looking to increase the intensity of their walking for the first time.

She added: "The treadmill is perfect for beginners because it actually assists you in forward walking motion due to the treadmill belt.

"Usually steep climbing or stepping is quite an advanced activity, but with the aid of the treadmill incline option coupled with the option to adjust your incline (as well as the speed of your walk).

"It makes it a much easier starting point. The treadmill is also easier on your knees if you suffer from arthritis or knee pain."

Intense cardio can burn calories quickly but often wreaks havoc on our bodies. Instead, walking on a treadmill can offer a more gentle way to workout.

Alicia said: "While our walking gait is different on a treadmill, as we take smaller steps, which makes it easier on our joints.

"Newer treadmill models may also come with more belt cushioning. This makes a treadmill not only great for beginners but for those suffering joint pain."
