Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said Labour was 'continuing to back drivers'

Drivers around the UK will see a massive upgrade to electric vehicle charging infrastructure with a massive £300million investment.

Labour confirmed today that the Government and private industry will be boosting the nation's EV charging network with more than 100,000 local chargers being installed.

Zapmap data shows that there are already almost 81,000 electric vehicle chargers across more than 39,700 locations across the UK.

The UK aims to have 300,000 chargers installed by the end of the decade to give drivers confidence in the national charging infrastructure.

More than 100,000 chargers will be installed thanks to funding through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, which will provide £381million.

In total, the Government is spending £4billion to support British industry and help drivers switch to electric vehicles.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood visited Believ's chargepoints in Exeter yesterday to praise the new investment from the charge point operator.

She said: "Great to see Believ confirm £300million of private investment for new EV chargepoints all over the UK!

"We continue to back drivers and carmakers to deliver our #PlanForChange. Even this morning's weather here in Devon can't stop us from charging into the future!"

The Labour MP for Nottingham South noted that a new chargepoint was being installed every 29 minutes, adding the Government was committed to making "even more progress".

This week's spending review also confirmed a funding boost worth £2.6billion to decarbonise transport from 2026-27 to 2029-30.

As part of this funding, £1.4billion will be given to "support the continued uptake of electric vehicles", including vans and HGVS.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

A further £400million will be spent on the rollout of charging infrastructure, as unveiled by Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Gary Bartlett, CEO of Believ, added: "It’s fantastic to see Government and private industry working together to accelerate the EV charging rollout.

"Collaboratively, we recognise the scale of investment required and the urgency of the need.

"Confidence in EVs will continue to grow as drivers see more infrastructure going into the ground. At Believ, we are very proud to be at the heart of this journey."

It follows further work from the Department for Transport to make switching to an electric vehicle even easier.

At the end of May, it announced that it would be cutting red tape to allow drivers and businesses to install EV chargers without needing to apply for planning permission.

Greenwood highlighted how the new measures will mean businesses can avoid months-long delays when waiting to have a charger installed.

She added: "We’re cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more chargepoints to power from and less red tape to deal with."
