The technology has been described as being a 'game-changer' for drivers and the national grid

Octopus Energy and BYD have unveiled Britain's first vehicle-to-grid bundle, allowing drivers to benefit from free electric car charging at home.

The Power Pack Bundle combines a leased BYD Dolphin electric vehicle equipped with V2G technology, a bi-directional Zaptec Pro charger, and access to a smart tariff providing free home charging.

Announced at Octopus Energy's Energy Tech Summit earlier today, the new bundle will offer drivers a comprehensive electric vehicle package for under £300 monthly.

The partnership between the UK's largest energy supplier and the world's leading electric car manufacturer has been hailed as "revolutionary".

It also marks a significant development in making electric vehicle ownership more accessible while supporting the electricity grid through innovative battery technology.

Vehicle-to-grid technology enables electric vehicles to function as mobile batteries, charging when electricity costs are low and feeding power back to the grid during expensive peak periods.

This capability helps reduce dependence on fossil fuel power plants whilst maintaining the vehicle's primary transport function.

The system operates through Octopus Energy Group's Kraken platform, automating the entire process for customers who simply plug in overnight.

Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy Group, said: "Bi-directional charging is the game-changer for drivers and the grid.

"By using some of the battery's spare capacity to help balance the grid, we can offer free driving. V2G is going to revolutionise our energy system and help drive costs down."

Drivers can reduce their annual costs by £620 compared to standard tariff charging and save almost £1,000 versus petrol vehicle running costs.

This marks the first integration of V2G technology directly into vehicles, removing the requirement for expensive first-generation V2G charging equipment.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, added: "We're thrilled to officially launch our V2G project with Octopus Energy and Kraken.

"BYD is fully committed to making intelligent, innovative, sustainable technologies available to our customers, and this project will allow them to unlock the full potential of electric vehicles not just as transport but as dynamic assets that can play a key role in supporting the grid."

Octopus Electric Vehicles, which launched in 2021, has grown to become the UK's largest EV-only leasing business, positioning the company to deliver this comprehensive bundle.

The firms have also partnered with Motability Operations, the UK's largest leasing company, to extend V2G technology access to disabled people nationwide.

Andrew Miller, Chief Executive of Motability Operations, praised the partnership, saying it was "great to see" V2G technology becoming more common as it will boost support for the national grid.

"For our customers, this could mean significantly lower energy bills and an even more affordable route into electric driving," he added

The Power Pack Bundle will be available later this year, with reservations now open through Octopus Electric Vehicles.

In 2024, BYD reported that its revenues had jumped by 29 per cent last year to £83billion, overtaking Tesla, which reported revenues of £72.5billion.
