Experts are urging drivers to make significant changes once the new number plates are rolled out

Experts are calling on drivers to make major savings in the coming weeks as the UK prepares to usher in significant new number plate changes.

On Monday, September 1, new number plate identifiers will be released across England, Scotland and Wales to signify the latest cars on forecourts.

Any cars registered after September 1 will be adorned with the "75" identifier tag on the number plate in the second major change of the year, following the launch of the "25" tag in March.

September is typically one of the most popular months to buy a new or used car since prices of used models fall as they get older, and drivers want to get their hands on the latest models.

Motorists are now being urged to ensure they are making the most of the "new reg plate day" on September 1 when the latest models arrive on forecourts.

Bill Fennell, from The Motor Ombudsman, suggested that drivers should do some research before heading to any dealerships to ensure they know what they need.

With the growing popularity of electric cars, drivers could make the choice to invest in more environmentally friendly vehicles.

However, some motorists may feel as if they are not ready to switch and stick with petrol or diesel, or invest in a reliable hybrid car.

Mr Fennell pointed to Labour's new Electric Car Grant which can help motorists save up to £3,750 off the price of a new EV if it costs £37,000 or less.

The additional savings can help motorists slash their expenses while investing in a new electric vehicle, alongside a host of other deals.

Many manufacturers will offer complimentary charging, free home EV charger installation or additional discounts on top of the Electric Car Grant if they order by a certain date.

Labour is consistently updating its list of eligible vehicles, with motorists having the chance to save up to £1,500 on the latest models from VW, Vauxhall, Nissan, Citroen and more.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Despite the deals and discounts on offer, the expert did warn motorists that they could face extra costs that they failed to recognise.

He said: "It's an exciting time to get behind the wheel of a new car, but the cost of ownership can add up quickly, so work these out on a spreadsheet or online calculator, and have a realistic picture from the outset.

"Running a car means paying out for things like road tax, insurance, fuel and/or charging, and regular and ad hoc maintenance.

"It can get even more expensive once free incentives that can come with a car expire during ownership, such as annual servicing, and when MOTs are needed at three years of age."

Britons are also encouraged to always test-drive before opting to buy a new or used car. This way, drivers can find out if the car is suitable for their needs and decide whether they feel right in the car.

Mr Fennell suggested that motorists could even take commonly used items with them to see if they could be suitable with their typical habits.

This could include car seats, buggies, golf clubs and other large items that may form part of their day-to-day routine.

The expert concluded: "The arrival of a new car registration can be appealing, but don't feel rushed or pressured by offers and discounts, as a car is often a few years' commitment as a minimum, which of course impacts household budgets and how much you will be spending every month when at the wheel.
