The latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that almost 30,000 new electric cars were registered in July.
This takes the total market share of electric vehicles to an impressive 21.3 per cent as it continues to chip away at dominant petrol car sales.
While July saw a five per cent drop in the amount of new vehicles registered compared to the previous year, EVs continue to act as a saving grace for the auto industry.
Sales of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars all declined by at least 7.9 per cent year-on-year, while electric cars rose 9.1 per cent and plug-in hybrid vehicles jumped an impressive 33 per cent.

Under the terms of the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, manufacturers must achieve a minimum percentage of total sales from electric and hydrogen vehicles.
By the end of the year, manufacturers must ensure that 28 per cent of total registrations are zero emission, before increasing to 80 per cent by the end of the decade.
After 2030, only new electric and hybrid models will be sold for five years, with 2035 seeing the complete sales phase-out of vehicles that emit emissions.
Labour has pledged more than £4.5billion for the uptake of cleaner vehicles, including the £650million Electric Car Grant, as well as funding for public EV chargers and other infrastructure.

According to data from Zapmap, there were 84,218 public electric vehicle chargers installed at the end of July 2025, with the Government cutting red tape to make it easier to install chargers without planning permission.
Experts are hopeful that the UK will reach its goal of having 300,000 public chargers installed by the end of the decade to support the uptake of EVs around the country.
In the coming weeks and months, the Government will continue to give the green light to vehicles that are eligible for the Electric Car Grant.
Any electric vehicle which is granted eligibility and is under £37,000 could see motorists save as much as £3,750 if they meet environmental and sustainability targets set out by the Government.
