Traffic maps indicate that traffic conditions will not return to normal until later this morning

Drivers are being warned of long delays near a major airport this morning as the police continue to conduct an investigation.

The M23 in Surrey is closed southbound between J8 (M25) and J9 (London Gatwick Airport) due to a "police led incident".

While traffic has been released on the northbound carriageway, Surrey Police remain on the scene following an incident.

Maps from National Highways show long delays of at least 60 minutes on the northbound carriageway.

Surrey Police have told drivers to avoid the area of the M23 after they were called to a "concern for safety incident".

Traffic maps indicate that traffic conditions will not return to normal until later this morning.

The incident on the M23 has caused traffic to back up on the A217 and A23. GB News has contacted Surrey Police for a comment.

A London Gatwick spokesperson told GB News: "Passengers driving to London Gatwick are advised to leave more to time to reach the airport this morning (10 September) due to the M23 being closed southbound due to an ongoing police incident. Diversions are in place."

The AA reports that traffic has been held on the M23 since 6.20am, with travellers heading to Gatwick Airport potentially facing long delays.

To help motorists navigate the road closure, National Highways has introduced a diversion route for the northbound and southbound carriageways.

Road users are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs if travelling on the M25 anti-clockwise:

  • Traffic is diverted from the M25 at J9 (Leatherhead)
  • Exit at J9 onto the A243 southbound
  • At the next roundabout (Knoll Roundabout), take the second exit onto the A24
  • Remain on the A24 heading towards Horsham
  • At Great Daux Roundabout, take the first exit onto the A264
  • Continue travelling on the A264 until the M23 J11 (Pease Pottage Interchange)
  • London Gatwick Airport traffic will enter the M23 northbound and exit at J9
