A National Highways spokesman said earlier this morning: "Traffic is currently held on the M1 southbound between J29 at Chesterfield and J28 at Mansifled to allow Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to work at the scene of the collision."
Three lanes reopened shortly after midday, with one remaining closed as recovery vehicles make their way to the scene.
Motorists approaching the affected stretch had been warned to expect delays of around half an hour.
However, tailbacks appeared to extend for approximately four miles.

Today's Boxing Day disruption comes on one of the busiest travel days of the festive period.
The AA predicted that 19.7 million car journeys will take place across Britain today.
That figure is expected to rise to 22 million on Saturday as families continue visiting relatives and shoppers head to the sales.
Peak congestion is anticipated between 10am and 7pm.

Motoring organisations have advised motorists to consider departing outside these hours where possible.
The M1 serves as one of the country's busiest motorways, running north to south between London and Leeds.
Junction 29 operates as a key interchange connecting the motorway to the A617.
The A617 is a major route linking the towns of Chesterfield and Mansfield with other areas across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
No further details have been provided regarding injuries or the number of vehicles involved in this morning's collision.
However, the M1 witnessed a serious crash last week between Junction 14 for Milton Keynes and Junction 15 for Northampton.
A man in his 20s tragically died after his car came off the M1 and crashed into a metal barrier.
The motorway was closed between the two junctions overnight on December 17.
