'I brought back the one I drove in Mauritania too, I have it at the farm'

Ahead of the launch of The Grand Tour: Sand Job, Jeremy Clarkson has revealed which supercar impressed him the most and convinced him to buy the luxury vehicle immediately.

As part of the new special, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond embark on their penultimate adventure by tackling the terrain of Mauritania.

The legendary trio complete their journeys in the footsteps of the historic Paris-Dakar rally using cheap, modified sports cars to tackle the Sahara Desert and “perilous” river crossings.

The Grand Tour has always displayed the best that the automotive world has to offer, and this time is no different, with Jeremy Clarkson gushing over the car he used to traverse the West African nation.

While James May used a traditional Italian sports car with a slick Maserati, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond both went with British sports cars.

Commenting on the use of his Jaguar F-Type V6 Supercharged VS, Clarkson hinted that it was one of the best cars that he's ever been behind the wheel of.

He said: “We’ll put it like this: it was so impressive, I came home and bought one immediately.

“And I don’t think Hammond bought an Aston Martin afterwards.”

Jeremy Clarkson called the Jaguar 'extraordinarily strong'

Never missing the chance to laugh at the misfortune of his friends, Clarkson took aim at Hammond’s questionable choice of an Aston Martin Volante V12.

The host of Clarkson’s Farm continued, saying: “The other two made unwise choices, as usual.

“The Jaguar was so tough and so unbreakable. I discovered something interesting: Jaguar has a reputation for making flimsy cars, cars that fall to pieces, it has this reputation for unreliability, so I couldn't understand why my car was so capable.

“I cannot lavish enough praise on that car. I brought back the one I drove in Mauritania too, I have it at the farm.”

The 63-year-old described the car as “extraordinarily strong”, boasting a 340bhp engine, a max speed of 161mph and can go from 0-60 in just over five seconds.

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host added: “I did some checking, and it turns out that at the time this car was made, Jaguar Land Rover – which is one company – had one test that a car had to pass before it could go on sale which is all to do with mounting curbs at high speed and running over potholes and biffing into things.

“And the test was designed for the Range Rover, but the Jaguar had to pass the same test.”

Jeremy Clarkson said Richard Hammond experienced particular issues during the challenge, adding that it “started off funny and then it became annoying”. He said: “His was as unreliable as mine was reliable.”
