Jaguar Land Rover and Chery have been in partnership since 2012

Jaguar Land Rover could be working on a deal that would see Chinese cars built in the UK, according to new reports.

Chinese car brand Chery is nearing a new partnership with Jaguar Land Rover to build its vehicles in the UK.

Auto Express reports that a potential boost to the UK and Chinese car industries could be discussed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he visits Beijing.

Sir Starmer and China's Xi Jinping have vowed to deepen economic ties between the two nations, as the UK held its first trade talks with China in seven years.

Chery is already an established brand in China and recently made its UK debut with the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9, with the 8 receiving rave reviews.

The Tiggo 8 was crowned as the Car of the Year at the Carwow Car of the Year Awards 2026, with the luxury SUV starting at £28,545.

Chery and JLR formed Chery Jaguar Land Rover in 2012, with the goal of building models in China, which could now provide benefits in the opposite direction.

China is Jaguar Land Rover's second-largest market outside the United States, as both brands could look to take advantage of new trade opportunities.

The manufacturers announced in 2024 that they would reinvigorate the Freelander brand in China as an electric model.

It highlighted that the brands could take advantage of Chery's market position in China and JLR's "unrivalled heritage and design strength".

GB News has reached out to Jaguar Land Rover for a comment.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the UK market, Chery recorded 5,517 sales over the last 12 months.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that Chery achieved 0.27 per cent of the total market share.

The Wuhu-based automaker has already outsold a number of established Western brands in the UK, including Alpine, Bentley, DS Automobiles, Jaguar and Smart.

Chery has been headstrong in its desire to conquer the UK market, with Gary Lan, CEO of Chery International UK, saying that the "sky's the limit".

He hinted that Chery could look to establish a research and development base in the UK, while confirming plans to have 100 dealerships across England, Scotland and Wales by the end of the year.

Like many other Chinese car brands moving into the UK market, Chery has introduced impressive technology to persuade drivers to invest in its hybrid and electric models.

Chery's head of global powertrain engineering, Dr Luan Yunfei, said the brand had "mastered the impossible" by creating the most advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain in the world.

The Chery Super Hybrid technology provides up to 1,400km of driving range, 90km of pure electric range and a mechanical efficiency of 98.5 per cent.
