'Over the course of the bank holiday, petrol went up 2.6p a litre to 157.02p and diesel by 4.2p to 189.42p'

Experts have warned drivers that they will continue to face high petrol and diesel costs after fuel prices soared over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Fresh data from the RAC shows that petrol prices have jumped 3p per litre in the last five days alone, to 157.02p, which is already 24p higher than before the start of the war in Iran.

Diesel drivers are struggling even more, with prices skyrocketing from a relatively low level of 142.38p at the end of February to 189.42p today.

This 33 per cent jump has forced many drivers to consider their options when it comes to travelling, especially with the recent bank holiday weekend, where an estimated 20 million leisure trips took place.

In the last five days alone, diesel costs have risen by more than four pence per litre, further adding to the misery of motorists who are travelling back to work this week.

Since the outbreak of war in Iran on February 28, diesel prices have jumped by almost 50p per litre, with drivers now paying £26 more for a 55-litre tank of fuel.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: "While the four-day Easter weekend will have been a good break for many, it's proved bad for fuel prices with both petrol and diesel going up significantly yet again.

"Over the course of the bank holiday, petrol went up 2.6p a litre to 157.02p and diesel by 4.2p to 189.42p.

Diesel pump and expensive fuel prices

Experts have warned that drivers will continue to face expensive petrol and diesel prices over the coming days and weeks

"Diesel looks set to go through the 190p-a-litre mark on Wednesday, which would then mean it's only 9p away from the record high set on June 25, 2022 (199.09p)."

The dire warning from the RAC comes as calls for the Government to act grow stronger, with experts demanding a cut to the rate of fuel duty to protect motorists at the pumps.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has continued to maintain that the Government is keeping fuel duty and other options "under review", although prices have spiralled since the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran.

Donald Trump has further escalated tensions, with the price of oil soaring to $111 (£84) after the President vowed to kill "a whole generation tonight" unless Iran agreed to a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has also conducted strikes against Kharg Island, Iran's strategic oil terminal in the Persian Gulf, potentially sending oil prices even higher.

Mr Williams added: "Drivers - particularly those who rely on diesel which is up by a third since the start of the conflict - are facing a torrid time, even with the current 5p-a-litre duty discount in place.

"Many will no doubt be looking to the Government to go further to ease the pain they're experiencing at the pumps."

GB News has rounded up the most expensive petrol and diesel prices across the UK, according to the Government's Fuel Finder tool.
