The DVSA has announced it will be making major changes to improve the vehicle testing system, which could see major benefits for motorists.
In a bid to modernise the process, the agency stated that it will be improving the digital processes and services for operators and authorised testing facilities.
As part of the changes, the DVSA built up its MYVT (manage your vehicle testing) service which allows drivers to better control their motoring documents.
The next set of changes listed by the agency includes replacing the technical application service, which is used for approvals or technical tests and affects individual vehicle approval, motorcycle single-vehicle approval and vehicle plating certificates.

The DVSA started to improve heavy vehicle plating certificates last year
PAIn its latest blog post, the DVSA wrote: “We know from customer feedback that this service can be complicated to use.
“It also doesn’t allow all customers to make their payments and bookings digitally without the help of the Customer Service Centre in Swansea.”
As part of a wider project, the DVSA explained that it was looking to make this easier for customers by improving and streamlining the service for technical tests.
While the changes are getting underway, the DVSA warned that it may affect some customers and their current accounts.
“We will be contacting customers soon who will be affected by this change, explaining how they can apply for their technical tests through MYVT,” the blog continued.
Once all the drivers with a pre-funded account have been moved over to the new system, the agency will start migrating people who don’t have an account onto the service.
The agency added: “We hope that by the end of the year, most of our customers will be able to apply for their technical tests using MYVT.”
Another digital improvement surrounds the current plating certificates. In March 2023, the DVSA started the process to make heavy vehicle plating certificates available digitally as part of its new strategy to have everything online.
Now the Government agency is working on some changes to allow heavy vehicle operators to access their plating certificates through the MOT history service.
A similar move was made by the agency earlier this year in April when the agency made the change to allow drivers to access MOT pass certificates digitally.
Although the DVSA did say it would continue to print failure certificates for the time being but would consider whether to take the same approach as passes in the future.
The DVSA commented: “We’re in the process of making this available and will update you when you’re able to view your certificate online.
