Britons need to update their motoring documents when they change addresses

Homeowners across the UK are being warned that they could be caught out by DVLA rules if they fail to declare certain life changes.

Buying a new home is cause for celebration for many, despite the stress of moving and the associated paperwork that comes along with it.

Britons are now being urged to ensure they are prepared to make changes to their details with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, the DVLA wrote: "New home? Congratulations!

"Don't forget, you can use our online service to tell us you've moved. Then put your feet up and relax!"

Motorists must update their driving details with the DVLA when they move homes or change addresses.

However, this does not need to be done if they are moving away temporarily, and the DVLA can still contact the driver at their permanent residence.

The DVLA also confirms that motorists can still continue to drive while they wait for their new documents to be sent back to them.

Drivers must follow a five-step process when they move home, starting with updating their provisional or full driving licence and updating their V5C vehicle log book.

If someone pays for the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) by Direct Debit, they must tell the DVLA when they change their address.

While the fourth point may not apply to many drivers, anyone with a personalised number plate must update their V750 or V778 documents if the plate is not on a vehicle.

Similarly, if someone has a trailer and they want to continue taking it abroad, they must register it at their new address.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The DVLA frequently posts on social media to remind drivers of the need to ensure their motoring documents are up to date.

This often includes the "Driver and vehicles account", which allows motorists to see their licence and vehicle details in one centralised location.

The account also gives motorists the chance to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email, with more than two million Britons already signed up to the account.

In a recent update, the DVLA said it would continue to add new services to the account, including for professional drivers.

The scheme was officially launched in August 2023, with the DVLA noting that drivers could make use of the 24-hour online service.

The DVLA has been met with support for the account and its features, with more than two million motorists using the Driver and vehicles account.

One driver said: "Once I had assembled the documents, it worked! Not always the case for a late 70s non-techie."

Another said: "Instructions are very easy to follow, and I was able to set up my driving licence and two cars’ details and gave me peace of mind that I will get reminders in good time to ensure my legal obligations are met for driving licence and car tax etc for my two cars."
