Banned plates includes anything with violent, racist or criminal references

A list of “offensive or provocative” number plates which are not suitable for UK roads has been unveiled.

The list includes licence plates which have references to violence, warfare, drugs, crime, antisocial behaviour, racism, sexism, sexual and gender identity, politics and some aspects of religion.

The list, procured through a Freedom of Information request, looks to protect the public from taking offence as drivers who breach the rules could face a fine of up to £1,000.

While the DVLA said it tries to limit the number of inappropriate licence plates, some slip through with the Government receiving complaints.

Some plates, such as PEN 15 and ORG 45M, both of which have been bought and sold in the past despite their crude nature.

Other examples of questionable plates from the past that are allowed include DEV 1L, which was previously withheld in 2016, S70 LEN, depicting the word stolen and ASA 551N, which refers to assassin.

Despite these plates being more humorous than offensive, this year’s list is quite different.

Plates that have been banned from the 74 release include references to violence, such as *S74 BBR (stabber), *S74 BBY (stabby) and AT74 CKU (attack you).

Licence plates which resemble racial slurs or LGBTQ-phobic insults are also being withheld, as well as a number of combinations resembling sexual references.

Drivers can be fined for having incorrect number plates by the DVLA.

Number plates in the UK have to meet certain requirements. They must be made from a reflective material with the front plate displayed in black characters on a white background.

The rear plate must display black characters on a yellow background and the lettering must be in the Charles Wright 2001 typeface.

Regtransfers explained: “The DVLA faces a tough, ongoing battle to find a balance between people's right to free speech and their duty to keep the public area polite.

“As society evolves, so does the language and symbols considered offensive, and while there may be disagreements about some decisions about what is offensive or censorship, the goal is to apply standards without violating people's rights.

People will definitely keep talking about these kinds of rules, which are a reflection of bigger issues like morality, freedom, and respect in our constantly changing society.

“As a final note, it’s worth mentioning that 74 number plates may only be displayed on eligible vehicles originally registered on, or after, September 1 2024.”
