The GOV.UK Wallet and App, launching later this year, will contain a digital driving licence

The DVLA has launched a survey to hear opinions from motorists and organisations on the incoming rollout of the digital driving licence service.

A new digital driving licence will launch before the end of the year as part of the Government's transition to have more digital services available for Britons.

The digital driving licences will be found in the new GOV.UK Wallet and accompanying App. It will be one of the first documents included in the service ahead of a wider rollout.

Drivers will be able to access the digital licence on their phones, although the move will not act as a replacement for the physical photocard licence.

According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the GOV.UK App will eventually include documents, including Veteran Cards and DBS checks.

The DVLA is working alongside DSIT to ensure the service is suitable for millions of drivers over the coming months and years.

To aid in the development of the technology, the DVLA's Customer Insight Team is conducting research into the impending rollout of the new service.

The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) stated that the research was designed to gather insights from users to verify driving licences as part of business practices.

Businesses can use the service in different ways, including to confirm driving entitlements and validate the identity of individuals.

The survey, which will inform any potential changes and improvements to the DVLA's processes, will close on July 17.

The BVRLA stated: "Completing the questionnaire is voluntary and, as all replies are anonymous, unfortunately, the DVLA is unable to investigate any queries raised in response to the survey."

The survey questions how key industry players use DVLA services or a driving licence for verification purposes, and whether an organisation would consider using a digital licence for verification.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The new digital driving licences are expected to launch later this year through the GOV.UK Wallet, with upgrades being added over the coming years.

Speaking at the time of the launch, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the new digital ID as a "game changer" for millions of people.

The Labour MP for Swindon South added: "The innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure. We are delivering on the Plan for Change by making public services work for everyone."

The GOV.UK Wallet will be fully secure with security and identity verification measures, in addition to a single sign-on, removing the need for different details for services.

Drivers will be able to build a personalised homepage for their GOV.UK Wallet and App, by answering questions about their preferences.

Once they have completed this, they will be able to see the most important documents for them, including MOT reminders or the ability to apply for car tax.

The Wallet and App will include a generative AI chatbot to help people find answers to "complex and niche questions".

Peter Kyle, Science Secretary, said: "Along with CDs, the Walkman and flip phones, the overflowing drawer rammed with letters from the Government and hours spent on hold to get a basic appointment will soon be consigned to history.

"GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the Government could be issued to you virtually."
