New data has shown which filling stations charge the most for the average price of a litre of petrol around the UK.
The research, from the RAC Foundation, found that Shell was typically the most expensive fuel station in the country.
The British company charged an average of 142.6p per litre for petrol and 151.2p per litre for diesel on Thursday.
This was more expensive than all other major fuel retailers, including the “big four” supermarket chains.
Drivers could typically save an average of £3.14 when refilling at the cheapest petrol station

In comparison, Morrisons had the cheapest costs, charging just 136.9p for petrol and 145.5p per litre for diesel.
For the average family car with a 55-litre petrol engine, drivers could typically save £3.14 when filling up at Morrisons than a Shell forecourt.
Shell’s website outlines that prices may vary between forecourts “for a number of reasons” including the cost of buying and transporting the fuel.
It is only able to control prices at company-owned sites, with around half of Shell-branded service stations owned by independent dealers who can set their own prices.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “While this data shows that on average supermarket-branded fuel is most keenly priced, as might be expected, motorists would still be best advised to shop around because the data also shows that prices are influenced by local competition.
“The transparency this data provides will give both motorists and ministers a better picture of the petrol and diesel market.
“Topping this price league table should give retailers cause for concern.”
Data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that motorway service stations remain the most expensive places to buy petrol or diesel.
Drivers will pay around 25p extra for petrol and diesel when visiting a motorway service station compared to the UK average.
Motorists who frequently shop at supermarkets can save a further two pence per litre, with many rewards and loyalty schemes lowering prices further.

Morrisons was found to offer the cheapest average price for a litre of petrol

Experts have consistently advised drivers to visit supermarkets when filling up as it will usually be between two and four pence cheaper per litre of fuel.
This is generally down to the high quantities of fuel they buy, allowing them to offer lower prices.
