New electric car sales made up 26.5 per cent of the market last month

Sales of used electric vehicles have overtaken diesel cars for the first time on a leading online marketplace, as British drivers turn their backs on polluting vehicles.

New data shows that 16 per cent of total sales on online used car retailer cinch were electric cars, while diesel vehicles accounted for just 13 per cent.

This is a huge change compared to 12 months ago, when only one in 10 sales were electric and diesels made up 19 per cent.

It comes as drivers are making a clear move away from new diesel cars as well, with the latest data showing that just 4,307 diesel cars were registered in August.

This is a huge 16.6 per cent drop compared to the same time last year, with the market share of new diesel cars falling to just 5.2 per cent.

In comparison, almost 22,000 new electric cars were sold for an impressive market share of 26.5 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Abhishek Sampat, head of electric vehicles at cinch, said: "EVs used to be a relatively niche choice in the used car market, but not anymore."

Electric vehicles now make up one in every six cars that are sold on cinch, with Mr Sampat highlighting that uptake for EVs is growing every month.

In total, 66 different electric vehicle models were sold in August, an increase of 19 compared to the previous year.

The most popular electric vehicle on cinch is the Tesla Model 3, which is also one of the most popular EVs on the road across the UK.

In August, it was the fourth most popular vehicle, being narrowly beaten by the Model Y for the crown of the best-selling electric vehicle.

Following the Model 3 is the classic Nissan Leaf, which is set to benefit from a facelift as experts anticipate the rollout of the new Leaf from Sunderland's production facility next year.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The new Leaf will come equipped with an impressive 375-mile battery range and rapid charging speeds, with the EV adding up to 260 miles of range in just 30 minutes.

However, the list of the 10 fastest-selling EVs on cinch so far this year contains some lesser-known vehicles, including the Skoda Enyaq IV, Renault Zoe and MG ZS EV.

Last month alone, electric cars sold at a rate of 43 per cent faster than diesel vehicles and 29 per cent faster than petrol cars on cinch.

New brands are also making a splash in the EV space, with BYD, Omoda and Jaecoo making an impression on British motorists looking for an affordable electric car.

Although inflation levels rose during the last 12 months, the average price of an electric vehicle fell by just three per cent, to a price point of around £16,000.

On the cheaper end, a Smart Forfour was sold for £7,000 in August, while another motorist splashed out more than £51,000 for an electric Porsche Taycan.

Mr Sampat concluded: "Many buyers are still looking for a diesel, and there are good reasons for doing so, but if a barrier to going electric has been the price of the car - it may be time to reconsider.

"The average price of an EV has come down in the last 12 months, driven by lots of new models launching at the value end of the market."
