'Insurance costs can vary significantly based on your individual circumstances and preferences'

A list of the cheapest cars to insure across the UK has been revealed as drivers deal with the unaffordable rise in premiums.

Research by Which? found that average prices for insurance can vary by almost £1,000 depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

According to the data, the Peugeot 206 was ranked as the cheapest vehicle on the list, with drivers potentially seeing quotes of just £241 per year.

The 206, which has long been a staple on UK roads, can be purchased for around £1,600, making it a suitable option for those struggling with the cost of living crisis.

The Porsche Boxter was ranked in second place, with an insurance price point of just £243.

Despite having an impressive 3.2-litre engine and a top speed of 170mp, the insurance for the vehicle was found to be very affordable.

Another British favourite placed in third place, notably the Mazda MX-5, with an average premium price of £249.

While many will be looking to switch providers or even vehicles, the cost of motoring has hammered millions of Britons as prices continue to jump.

In March, the average car insurance premium rose by 46 per cent year-on-year, putting additional pressure on motorists around the UK.

The 46 per cent jump in price has generally been attributed to the rise in the cost of claims for insurers, with the number of claims rising to levels much higher than in the pandemic years.

High inflation rates have also impacted these areas, with repairs costing more, in addition to spare parts, energy and the cost of hiring specialist mechanics.

Which? explained: “Typically, newer cars come with better safety and security features, which could mean lower insurance costs in some cases.

“On the other hand, older cars might have lower insurance premiums because they generally have lower market values, making them less expensive to replace or repair in case of damage.

“Insurance costs can vary significantly based on your individual circumstances and preferences.

“The best way to find out the insurance cost for a specific car is to compare quotes on websites such as Confused.com, Compare the Market or GoCompare.”
