Switching up your diet is an effective step towards building a long-term healthy lifestyle from the inside out

The state of your nails is a reliable indicator of your overall health, along with your skin and hair. As a result, like with many aspects of your health, it is wise to pay attention to your diet.

Of course, external products can help you on your way to strong, healthy nails. But, from testing out different cuticle oils to different hand moisturisers, it can become exhausting - and expensive.

Instead, your money would be better-spent on your weekly shop because, as one nutritionist told GB News, failing to consume sufficient foods with key vitamins and minerals can cause your nails to become weak.

As a result, consuming nutrient-dense products is crucial to deter damage, with Margaret Dabbs revealing: "Salmon and eggs are two foods that are amazing for nail health.

"Incorporating them into your diet a few times a week will noticeably improve your nails. Magnesium and folic acid are also important to nail health, so load up on dark leafy vegetables like spinach."

Eggs, filled with protein, vitamin D, B12 and biotin, are excellent for adding extra shine and growth to your nails.

"Eggs are also one of the most bioavailable protein sources," celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippman explained. "Keratin is a protein found in nails. It's critical to consume enough protein in your diet to maintain strong, healthy nails."

Meanwhile, salmon is bursting with vitamin D, protein, biotin, zinc, copper, selenium, vitamins B6 and B1, and omega-3 fatty acids, promoting overall nail health.

And, without enough vitamin B12, nail discolouration might occur, turning your nails brown or even grey due to the vitamin's developmental role in creating healthy red blood cells.

As well as incorporating these two breakfast favourites, Margaret added: "Nuts are also filled with healthy fats and vitamins, so they’re a great snack.

"Make sure they’re not salted or processed where possible - if you want to liven them up, eat them as part of a fruity trail mix and remember to stay hydrated, so drink plenty of water."

She also recommended consuming plenty of calcium through healthy dairy sources, which include beverages like yoghurt, milk and cheese.

But, if your nails have already suffered heavy damage, then Margaret has recommended deploying a nail strengthener for when you find your nails particularly dry and brittle.

She added: "Applying a treatment twice weekly will bring even the most damaged, ridged, flaky nails back to life.

"In the meantime, you might want to consider protecting them from further damage, wearing gloves when you’re cleaning and applying a long-wear protective clear topcoat can prevent further damage as they heal."

Above all else, experts have recommended enjoying a fully balanced, diverse diet for maximum health. If you have any concerns surrounding your health, consult a medical professional.
