The technology will use HbA1c testing through a simple mobile application

A groundbreaking development in diabetes care has emerged with the introduction of the world's first smartphone-enabled blood test for assessing type 2 diabetes risk.

The innovative 'Diabetes Health Check' utilises HbA1c testing, considered the gold standard for diabetes diagnosis, through a simple mobile application.

This technological advancement arrives at a critical time for the UK, where approximately 5.2 million people live with diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Additionally, an estimated 1.3 million individuals remain unaware they have the condition.

The new testing method promises to transform preventative care for a disease that places an £8.8 billion annual burden on the NHS.

The testing process requires users to obtain a small blood sample through a finger prick, which is then applied to a specially designed microfluidic assay.

Patients scan this assay using their smartphone camera through the dedicated app, receiving their HbA1c results within minutes.

This measurement reflects average blood glucose levels over the preceding two to three months, providing a comprehensive picture of diabetes risk.

The rapid turnaround represents a significant improvement over conventional testing methods, which typically involve laboratory analysis and can require weeks or even months for results.

The technology has been developed for use across various settings, including homes, community centres, workplaces and clinical facilities.

The NHS has launched a pilot programme for this innovative test in the North East and North Cumbria region, commissioned by Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria.

This initiative supports NHS objectives for type 2 diabetes prevention and corresponds with the government's recently unveiled 10-year NHS strategy.

The plan promotes digital prevention methods and care delivered within home and community settings.

Research indicates that lifestyle modifications can decrease type 2 diabetes risk by 50 per cent, making early detection through accessible testing particularly valuable.

The smartphone-based approach enables individuals to understand their health status promptly and implement necessary lifestyle adjustments before the condition develops.

PocDoc, Britain's foremost digital health diagnostics firm, created the testing system following its successful 'Healthy Heart Check' for cardiovascular disease screening.

Their heart health test has become the most extensively utilised CVD screening tool in UK communities, workplaces and residences, with projections suggesting it will achieve the highest sales figures for any medical test since Covid.

The diabetes test addresses mounting healthcare expenses, with projections indicating annual costs could reach £16.9 billion within 25 years.

By enabling swift identification of at-risk individuals, the technology supports early intervention strategies that could substantially reduce both disease prevalence and associated NHS expenditure.
