Tributes pour in as classic singer and actor Steve Lawrence dies at 88 ‘Lost a great one’

Singer, actor and comedian Steve Lawrence has died at the age of 88 following an Alzheimer’s battle, with tributes flooding in from fellow stars and fans.
The Go Away Little Girl singer was a member of the Grammy Award winning group, Steve and Eydie, along with his wife, Eydie Gorme.
Lawrence’s son David confirmed in a statement to Deadline: “My Dad was an inspiration to so many people.
“But, to me, he was just this charming, handsome, hysterically funny guy who sang a lot. Sometimes alone and sometimes with his insanely talented wife.
“I am so lucky to have had him as a father and so proud to be his son.
“My hope is that his contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered for many years to come.”

The singer rose to fame in the 1950s and 60s with group Steve and Eydie, with the two getting married in 1957.
When his wife died in 2009, Lawrence said in a statement: “Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years.
“I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing.
"While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

Following the news, endless tributes have been posted on social media from fellow US stars and fans from all over.
Taking to social media, actor Seth MacFarlane penned: “RIP Steve Lawrence— This guy has been a musical hero of mine for years. His effortless baritone and superb phrasing made the most difficult songs sound easy.
"He was a profound influence, and when I actually got to meet him one night after doing a show in Vegas, I learned that he was also as nice and humble a guy as ever there was. Thanks for leaving behind so many incredible recordings, Steve. You'll be missed.”
Actor and singer Robert Davi wrote: “Steve Lawrence has passed - he was a marvellous talent on his own - he and his wife Eydie Gorme' were legendary. I never met him but we spoke one time on the phone - and had a blast - RIP and keep Heaven singing !"

“We lost a great one today. Steve Lawrence passed away. No one made my dad laugh more than Steve,” another social media user shared.
Someone else added: “There was no team better than the great Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. What a gift to have seen them in person- with Sinatra and alone. Now with the passing of Steve Lawrence, they are reunited. They were something big. RIP. (And thats Steve Allen on bongos here).”
Posting a photo of Lawrence with his late wife, one commented: “Steve & Eydie. Together again. R.I.P. Steve Lawrence (July 8, 1935 – March 7, 2024).”
“Steve Lawrence, one of the last of the old time crooners, passed away today at 88 years old. He was a great singer and a very funny comedic actor in his appearances on The Carol Burnett Show. He joins his late wife Eydie Gorme in Heaven,” another added.
