Sir Tom Jones has been showered with well wishes from fans concerned for his health

Sir Tom Jones has been forced to cancel a concert just hours before he was due to go on stage in Germany.

The 85-year-old Welsh singer told fans he was "very sorry" for pulling out of a gig as part of his European tour in Bremen, North Germany, disappointing hundreds of loyal fans.

Five hours before Jones was due to take the stage, he posted on social media to announce he couldn't perform as he had contracted an upper respiratory infection.

However, the veteran performer reassured his loyal legion of fans that the show would be rescheduled for the following week, and no one would miss out on a chance to see him sing.

In a statement posted to X, the Welsh performer said: "Hello to all the fans in Bremen. Unfortunately, I must postpone my show this evening, as I've contracted an upper respiratory infection that needs treatment and rest.

"I know this is really disappointing and will cause inconvenience to you all, and I'm very sorry about that. But the show will now go ahead on Monday 28th July, so I look forward to seeing you then.

"All tickets will remain valid for the re-scheduled date.

"Until then, thank you for your understanding. Love, Tom."

Fans flocked to social media to send their well-wishes to the hitmaker, encouraging the star to rest up and look after himself.

"Get well soon Sir Tom, I'm praying for you make a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself!", one user penned on X while another said: "Take care, stay safe and rest up, your health comes first."

Another added: "Wishing you a speedy recovery, Tom! Take all the rest you need." (sic)

It was the first gig the Delilah singer cancelled in over seven years; Jones had to postpone a string of shows in 2018 after contracting a bacterial infection.

The Grammy award winner has faced numerous health battles in recent years, including a double hip replacement - the left replaced in 2017, and the right in 2022.

The replacement came after he began to struggle to stand for long durations during his performances and work commitments.

He previously told Mail Online he could only do "about four songs without sitting" before his surgery.

The hit-maker has also struggled with his weight and decided to overhaul his diet by cutting down on drinking alcohol and adopting a paleo diet, which focuses on eating lean meats, fruits, fish, nuts, and seeds.

Jones praised his own ability to keep performing, despite his age and online naysayers, telling The Mirror at the time: "Well, thank God my voice is still working.

"I mean, I can't believe it, but it is true. When I am singing, I am like, 'How the hell is this coming out of me? '

"Honestly, if the voice was not there, I am sure I would be going 'Urgh, I don't want to do so many shows,' but I love it as the voice is still working! "

Jones has performed for over six decades, debuting his first single Chills and Fever in 1964.

Spanning six decades, Jones has a career many others aspire to, earning prestigious accolades such as Grammy Awards, Brit Awards, and earning a knighthood awarded by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.

His reputation landed him a spot on The Voice as a celebrity judge, which he has held since the show's launch in 2012.

He is expected to perform next at his rescheduled show in Bremen, North Germany, on July 28.
